Majestic Adamson’s Peak provides a dramatic backdrop to the township of Dover and picturesque Port Esperance with its three islands – Hope, Faith and Charity.
Once a convict probation station (est. 1845), now a popular seaside destination and main service centre for the area, Dover‘s main industries are tourism, aquaculture, fishing, orcharding and forestry.
In and around Dover there is a good array of services, including banking, post office, newsagent, pharmacy, takeaway, supermarkets, mechanic/service station, ‘wood fired’ pizza restaurant, Dover RSL, laundromat, hardware, hairdresser, online access centre, sailing club, golf course and most types of accommodation including a well located caravan park on the beachfront, a variety of clean, comfortable bed & breakfasts, backpacker and selection of nicely appointed self contained apartments.
It’s a good idea to stock up with supplies here before heading further south. A short drive inland from Dover to the Esperance River Picnic ground rewards with a delightful spot on the bend of the river with BBQ shelter and toilets. Dover foreshore has some easy walkways and BBQ shelter for picnics at the beach. Recreational fishing from the wharf is another popular pastime.
The alternative coastal route into Dover, via Police Point, is well worth the detour, providing some spectacular coastal views toward Bruny Island and the Channel, and gives a close up glimpses of salmon farm operations. Surveyors Bay has a lovely picnic area – BBQ & toilet
