Huon Aquaculture has been growing salmon and ocean trout in Tasmania for over 30 years. The southern region is one area which creates the perfect environment for us to grow happy, healthy fish. The different water sources and environmental conditions allow us to mirror the natural life-cycle of salmon, as well as providing an opportunity to naturally synchronise growth.
In Southern Tasmania, this begins in our hatcheries including Forest Home, Lonnavale and Whale Point. Some of these facilities have full water recirculation systems, that reuse 95-99 per cent of the water we need. This ensures that the fish live in optimum conditions and go to sea healthy and in peak condition.
These fish are then transferred to our fish farm facilities at Hideaway Bay and Storm Bay. Here we hold fish in off-shore pens, where they are fed and cared for until they are harvested. We have found that fish enjoy these locations it as it closely mimics their natural habitat. Due to biosecurity measures necessary to protect our fish, these sites are not available to visitors.
If you would like to hear more about us, and purchase our award winning salmon and trout, drop by the Geeveston Visitors Centre. They’re open each day from 9am until 5pm, at 15 Church Street, Geeveston. Look at our display and purchase some product from the large selection available to take home for your favourite meal.
